Hey guys,
I've been listening to AC/DC and I'm a bit hooked to one part of the song "Ride On" (1:14 - 1:25), the pre-chorus. I was thinking we can actually put that part into Proud Mary if we're in the mood to mesh, whaddaya say? Was thinking about either after the intro riff (at the end) or after a chorus near the end (ie, rather than playing the intro riff after that chorus, we play this instead - I'm still thinking of a way to come back into the song - either we end on that note, or we come back rollin').

Just wondering how's jamming gonna be for this sem ? If we're gonna have any jamming sessions at all? With Mr Hee working and Mr Lee in the Labs, do we still have time for jamming?

But yes, i want to at least get some jamming clocked in this semester or I'd go crazy with the free time. Which reminds me, Tony what units are you doing? I speak of the entire duration of the Emerge KL competition organized by City Harvest Church which we, Sparks for Laughter, did not win but grabbed the 'Most Popular Performance' award. While it could've been better and sweeter, it's still an experience I won't trade for anything. I feel some growth as a performer (gained some stage balls) and maybe a lil as a musician. It's probably one of those rare times when you're on stage and you actually have a mad crowd cheering you on like a rockstar, hahaha (which is just so encouraging to make you bring out your best). Photo time =)

Here, from the beginning, "Let it be" by The Beatles was an automatic song choice because we tried it once jamming last year, and it sounded good? I gotta say, this song is embeded so deeply in me now I daresay I'll never forget it (or how to play it). It's rather melancholic now when I pick up the guitar and just pick the notes of the intro with my acoustic guitar, ahhh =)

As always, it all begins in the studio with some mistakenly taken pictures such as this. L-R: Jin, Shim, Tony and Me (yeah, that hand up there holding the guitar neck)

Then came our first trial: the preliminaries, still not knowing that we'll be eventual finalists.
Yup, gay as hell, but we had fun, so sue us!
To honour the SMU cluster for supporting us wholeheartedly, thanks so much =)

From that point on, our mindset changed from "Let's just get out there and have fun" to "Let's get out there, have fun, and win this damn thing!" Aw yeahh.

But we had a problem, after enjoying booming cheers for "Let it be", where do we go now? What song do we play?

Well, we stuck to the same song after finding out the same time limit's given for our song, and that we didn't have much time to practice another song anyway. So, like other bands, we stuck to it and did some rearrangements and played it even better than in the prelims =)

And suddenly, we find ourselves pitted in the finals against 3 other bands?! It's no wonder we look happy there, ya know? Ahh, that night was the best performance, it beats the finals anytime.
Yeapa yeaps, we happy people. I guess that's our high moment for the entire Emerge event, eh guys?

The Finals

.. was actually quite a letdown, but what the heck man, we had fun throughout the entire process.

Song choice was such an ASS I tell ya, we were going nuts deciding on a song. It went from Britney's 'Hit me baby one more time' -> 'Oops I did it again' -> Bon Jovi's 'It's my life' or Fallout Boys featuring John Mayer's 'Beat it' -> ?

It was when Jin did this miraculously retarded pose in our brainstorming session in the mamak after being advised against doing 'It's my life' by our coach that we decided to do...

Actually, we also thought of Muse' version of 'Can't take my eyes off you', but.. nahh~

All was cherry-merry ~~like ma balls were airy~~

our coach even told us we have a great, entertaining arrangement, though we had to work on timing and the technical parts. Which we decided to work on for our last minute 12am jamming session the night before the finals

until..

Shim actually broke one of his favourite sticks (no, not the one Michelle plays with) the night before the finals. Tragedy eh? Thankfully, he got a replacement the morning after =)

Hey hey...

I know its abit the late for me to put this in but have a listen to fallout boy's cover of Beat It. Its downloadable on limewire. I think its pretty catchy but thats just me. Its got a nice chorus which the crowd can sing to sort of like let it be. It doesn't have so many words in the chorus. And jo can be more involved with it too. I don't know about the vocals section but Tony did mention before that he doesn't it to be just him but the entire band out there.

Its just a random suggestion by me cause I know its pretty damn late to still be looking for a song. I had a chat about this song with Tony before but he said that there was no message that we sent out. But what if we don't have to send out a message and just do a song...

Things to look into....

Thanks to Michy for posting up the videos, after watching it several times, I feel that we are not engaging the crowd enough.

We still stick to our positions (mainly Me and Jo)

As Tony was singing, he couldn't do much, so me and Jo needs to move up to him and play along side him; especially during intervals, intro, solo or ending..

Watch these videos and try to follow them. I feel that they are great examples.

Our rhythm guitarist (Me la -_-) received some 'constructive criticism" (kena kutuk) by a judge for my rhythm lines, which I fully accept and understand, though my effects pedal did play a role in that gritty-choppy sound (which sounds sweet for fat, rock-oriented power chords). Jin is tempting me to buy more effects pedals, NO NO NO NO, I'm BROKE ok!

Sparks Emerge?

I gotta say, deciding to join Sparks for Laughter, my first and only band thus far, has been the best move I've done to enhance my musical side. It's the best step I've taken in music =D I've grown from a "I've-got-a-problem-hitting-the-footswitch-for-solos" guitarist to playing lead for Sweet Child O' Mine ~~with a couple of blatant mistakes here and there~~ with the band. I love this band.

I guess being in a band kinda makes you push yourself to finish what you did not play perfectly and that makes you grow into a better player/performer. Playing alone at home always allows you the choice to 'stop and start over' every time you hit a wrong note, which in a way, allows lil room for learning from errors. Trust me, I had a handful of errors with the band ~~even on stage~~.

I'm writing fresh from a preliminary round in Jin and Tony's church, City Harvest, where we're only allowed 2 minutes to perform (though they kinda gave us a lil less somehow, ah well). We didn't get to do our best because they cut us off at the final bits, but at least I think we're quite convincing with lil or no noticeable errors. Plus, from watching the other bands, I personally ~~boastfully and shamelessly~~ feel we have a good chance for the finals =D *Fingers crossed* And anyway, we've done what we could, so, like the song we played, I believe we should just "let it be"

Though it's just us 4 boys this time, it still was (very) fun :p Jin played quite a blistering solo; kicker of ass he is with that sexy white les paul studio model of his.

Hello Sparko Marcos! Lately, I've been going karaoke with Jin Seon and Tony twice, and it's really been grueling long vocal battles - especially today's, which was an approximately 7 hour long war! My goodness, it was supposed to end with 3 hours (we only paid for that) but no one made us go so we paid our bill, then went on and on and on and on.... you get my drift?

Anyway, things are looking great with our two main vocalists, so Sparks, be prepared for a great year ahead =D When's our first practice session may I ask? Hope everyone's been practicing a lil at least, I've been lazy, but I do practice, a lil at least XD Seeing you all too soon!

Songs settled, we have another problem to discuss on, guys.

Jamming day.

A day where everyone can make it.

From the timetables I've seen this sem, it seems they can be quite sucky.
With spread out classes starting from 8 (oh, such ungodly hour) through till 6pm.

Fridays this sem will be out of the question.
Uber packed, and most of us (if not all) finish uber late at 6pm.
Boo. I was hoping we could keep our Friday jamming days.

I'm suggesting Tueday afternoons.
But we shall have a look at the rest of the band's timetables.

Do comment on your preferable jamming day.

First off: No one responded to my "voices" post -_-"

Ok, now, I got some problems to ask Jin since I don't go online much to talk to him bout it. I think the Hinder song needs 2 electric guitars, and so does the Fallout Boy song (which also needs drop-D tuning if I'm not wrong). While I do not fancy retuning my guitar to an alternate tuning just for one song, are you gonna bring your electric guitar, Jin? Or are you gonna just play the chords using the acoustic?

Problem 2: I need guitar Effects, yup yup, I do, Shim got any recommendations? checked up on any dude? Budget ~ 1000 Ringgitus

Question 3: Which 6 songs are we going to do first my friends? Shall we go for the first six posted by the first 3 ppl who posted their lists? Or the last 6? Any suggestions my friends?

Harrow everybody !! How's the holidays been for everyone ?

I want to know your opinion on the song Hey Tonight by Creedance Clearwater Revival. Its a really old old song, its very country sounding and it seems like a fun song to try. Not saying that we should but its just an idea. Just want your opinion on it.

I have my list! Whee!!!

I'm sorry I mentioned 7th Dec as the deadline. Got my days and dates mixed up. Should've been 3rd of December, as Shim'd be leaving for HK on Thursday. My bad.

My list of 5 songs, here we go:

hehe, just felt bored and thought I'd put up a few of my ideas for the band - which I will incorporate into my 5 song list due 7th December of course (yes, I can hardly wait). Anyway, as most of you would probably know by know, I'm currently doing data entry work with Poing at the same office, which is an overwhelmingly boring job (picture me with cobwebs all over except the two typing hands everyday)

After the first day of repeatedly dozing off hopelessly at work, I knew I needed a solution to keep my brain a lil more active, so the second day I brought my handsfree and relied heavily on my phone's MP3s. Woohoo, I managed to keep my head bopping rather than lolling off till 6.15, which was rather miraculous given the circumstances.

Cool part is, when you're so bored, listening to good ol' songs that you used to like but grew tired of would somehow... reignite that lil spark you had for it, like how 'learn to fly' made me smile coyly to myself when I heard it playing suddenly. Anyway, there's already a number of songs that I've listed down after work that day from all that listening from the time work began till work ended (mind you, that's quite long), and I decided that I wanna play/create a lead guitar part for the Carpenters' "Close to you", which I know would sound rather mellow to you fellow hardrockers (hehe, actually I think it's just Tony and Shim) hahaha, I wanna try and make it sound a lil less pop-ish, and perhaps explore my spontaneity in writing such parts and also, most importantly, let our lead singer have a proper song to handle (Jin Seon) so she could gear up and have something to look forward for.

I'm just really bored and impatient to have told you all everything I thought of way before time, but, I guess I just can't help it man, I WANNA PLAY. And, I've yet to start on writing the guitar parts, but I'm thinking of either starting soon or during the remaining 1 month of holidays I have after my work period ends. Oh yeah, also, I'd like to ask if it's OK with you dudes if I picked an instrumental song, maybe just one? Like Michy mentioned, I too think it's rather selfish if I keep picking instrumentals (more precisely, GUITAR instrumentals), cuz our dear JS and Michy'd be left with nothing much to do. Hmmm... Maybe I'll look up "Little Wing" WITH vocals, then it'd be able to resolve JS's lack of involvement, as for Michy, chord accompaniment maybe? Do keep practicing people!

So hello, I have been semi-enjoying my break so far.

First week of the break was spent stoning with you guys, so there isn't much to report over there.

However, the weekend proved to be exciting with the wedding of a cousin to tend to. Never had I attended a wedding which I was so closely involved with, in terms of logistics and financial outlay. Of course, being the starving artist that I am, I managed to reclaim my expenses later on.

The usual weddings we might be familar with would involve high quantities of the 'glam' factor; not so for this. Small town people are contented with simpler ceremonies. While saying that, make no mistake that I am one bit condescending in that statement.

The absense of the 'glam' factor made things fun. The groom's mother had to cook the food herself, with the aid of my mother and several other of their cronies. Just the usual standard fare of fried beehoon (炒米粉), some curry chicken (加里鸡) and some miscellaneous dishes which I won't really be bothered mentioning here.

As usual, there was the pre-wedding-night-dinner where intimate friends, bride's family sans the bride and us feasted to some simple fare. I was pretty surprised that the dinner lasted until sometime around 11pm. Note: Dinner, not gathering. I was amazed by how much food my aunt managed to keep rolling out of the kitchen at such an ungodly hour. See guys, that's what your mom would do for your wedding.

My friend, Asyraf toted along as he has not attended a kampung wedding prior to that. Turns out his shots were better than mine, for obvious reasons.***
The actual dinner was held at a school hall. Old school school hall. The stage was made of wood, it was hot and sweaty, and I had to go home halfway to shit.

I sent this to Jo Kien while I was exercising my bowel muscles. "I was shitting halfway, and this cockeral cockle doodle doo-ed right outside the window. Scared the shit out of me." At least I could give my muscles a rest. Heh.

While totally unrelated to the paragraph above, the food was good. The sharks' fin soup was a wicked sick. With one of my cousins not eating sharks' fin soup and only 7 people at the table, I was quite full already after that second dish. Fish was excellent, steamed codfish. The rest was the standard fare of fried rice, some prawns and chicken et cetera.

All in all, it was a nifty wedding. While somewhat energy draining, the slower pace of it makes it all so fun.

Plan your own weddings. Its alot more fun. Its also a whole lot cheaper. RM480 per table at your friendly local Hicksville.

Also, my cousin gave me a nice big red packet, which makes things even better.

Hey guys.

Yes, Jo. I bet all of us are itching to play again. Unfortunately, we don't all live in KL/Selangor.
I personally have yet to touch the piano/keyboard, since my free time now is spent on tutoring Add Maths (bro's taking spm).

Well, just a quick reminder.
Remember to shortlist 5 possible songs for Sparks to play, by the first Friday of December, 7th December 2007.

FIVE, nothing more or less la. Otherwise it'd be tough to choose.
And don't just choose songs that YOU want to do, make sure that your choice takes into account the whole band. What we're capable of doing, and try to involve everyone. Like obviously if I were to choose Flight of the Bumblebee (which I obviously cannot play at the mo), it'd be rather pointless. That'd be a piano solo and not a band thing. So yeah, choose wisely!
